The Malabar Story

Our Malabar story starts with brief history lesson. In the 1800s, ‘quinine’ was popularized in the British colonies in India for its anti-malaria benefits. The quinine was extracted from the bark of the Cinchona tree, native to the Andean forests in South America. Word spread globally around the mid 1800s for its amazing health benefits, and the race had started amongst the spice traders to get a slice of the global trade in quinine.

The Dutch Government of Indonesia initiated the first plantings of the Cinchona trees in West Java in the foothills of Mount Malabar in the 1860s. The first attempts were unsuccessful, but eventually a thriving plantation was established. The region evolved over several decades to become the worlds largest producer of quinine, a title which lasted for over half a century.

From those same plantations in the misty foothills of Mount Malabar, we source our exceptional quality quinine, which is the core ingredient of our flagship Tonique Water.

We produce our range of Malabar mixers using all natural ingredients and with lower levels of sugar than most. Our commitment to quality and respect to the craft of mixing fine drinks are the essence of our brand. We go sparingly with our natural flavors and sweetness, so we leave space for you to create your perfect drink. Malabar Mixers don’t dominate, they enhance your creation.
